Professor Paul Salkovskis inspires through words and deeds

Going “above and beyond” is interpreted differently by people but how many would proclaim to having had their hands down a lot of toilets?

Professor Paul Salkovskis admits to having used the behavioural experiment on many occasions when helping patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to guide them through the process of confronting one of the most challenging symptoms – fear of contamination.

This humble, toilet-plunging technique reveals the professor’s deep compassion and dedication to helping people conquer their anxiety; he shares this experience and decades of expertise and personal insights in a fascinating session with Rachel Handley: host of the “Let’s Talk about CBT – Practice Matters”.

The latest episode in the podcast series for the BABCP is a compelling listen for anyone interested in understanding OCD and gaining practical tips for improving their therapeutic practice.

Professor Salkovskis, who is the Director of The Oxford Centre for Psychological Health which houses The Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology Training and Research (OxICPTR), The Oxford Health Specialist Psychological Intervention Centre (OHSPIC) and The Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre (OCTC), said: “It was a real pleasure to talk with Rachel on this podcast for the BABCP, which as a professional organisation places service users at the forefront of their priorities.”

The conversation helps explain why CBT therapists might find themselves doing some unusual things to help people with OCD; it reveals that when led with science and bravery sometimes the most profound breakthroughs can start in the most unexpected places.
